Side by sides (also known as UTVs) are available in several different makes and models. Some side by sides are designed specifically for utility work, while others are meant more for trail riding. Even within those categories, there are many different optional features, extras, and accessories meant to account for individual needs and riding styles. It can get very confusing, especially if you’re a first-time buyer. That’s why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has created this guide to buying a side by side. 

Make A Budget

Start by creating a budget. Without a set price limit and a good handle on extra expenses like maintenance fees and insurance, you can easily end up spending more money than you planned to spend. If you find a new UTV that has all the features you’re looking for but is too expensive, look for a similar used model (such as one made by the same company).

Passenger Capacity

Most side by side models can fit between two and six people. The more passengers the side by side can fit, the more the model will cost. While you don’t want to spend money on extra seats that won’t get used, making multiple trips isn’t ideal either. Figure out how many seats you’ll need before you purchase your side by side. 

Features To Prioritize

When shopping side by side models, be on the lookout for features that are a good fit for how you plan to use the UTV. For example, the best side by side for a farmer will usually be a model that can squeeze through narrow fence gates and barn doors while still being powerful enough to be used in utility work. A side by side with plenty of extra storage space for gear and a camo pattern is ideal for a hunting trip. The better you understand your own needs, the easier it will be to find a side by side that is right for you.
