Tips to Extend the Life of Your ATV
An ATV is a major investment, and it makes only sense that you would want to take steps to maximize its lifespan. As tough as these models are built to be, poor treatment can really wear down a four-wheeler, shaving months or even years off the time you have to enjoy it. That is why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has put together this list of tips to help you extend the life of your UTV.
Change the Oil
The process of checking and changing your ATV’s oil is a lot like the process of checking and changing the oil in your car. Insert the dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it again, and then inspect the oil. Dark and sludgy oil indicates that it is time for a change. Your owner’s manual will be able to tell you the recommended oil weight and type for your particular model.
Clean Your ATV Regularly
Besides just making your ATV look dingy, being constantly covered in grime can also lead to your quad rusting more quickly. To top it all off, caked-on dirt can also work its way into your air filter and clog up your vents. Regularly cleaning your ATV doesn’t just help it look better, it helps it run better as well.
Keep a Clean Air Filter
Speaking of air filters, you should regularly check your ATV’s filters, especially after a ride on a particularly dusty trail. Proper airflow is important to your vehicle’s engines, so make sure that you read the manual’s instructions on air filter cleaning and replacement.
Check the CV Belt
Most modern ATVs run on a CV belt transmission, which allows the engine to operate without a manual clutch. However, heavy usage can cause CV belts to become stretched and worn out. Unfortunately, a worn CV belt can be difficult to detect. Watch for performance issues, and contact a professional if you have any concerns. If you start to smell burning rubber, that is a sign that your CV belt is in need of immediate attention.
Treat Your Gas
Gasoline breaks down over time, clogging your fuel system and causing no end of problems. Always add fuel stabilizer to your tank before putting your ATV into storage.
Check Your Nuts and Bolts
All it takes is one loose bolt to cause an accident. Before each ride, inspect your ATV’s nuts and bolts, as well as the rubber padding that surrounds parts like the drive shafts and air intake. This is also a good opportunity to grease up the bearings and pivot points.
Maintain Your Tires
Both too much and too little tire pressure can damage your tires, so be sure to regularly check your pressure using a portable gauge. It is also important that you regularly check your tread depth, as this is what allows your tire to grip the road. Make sure that your ATV’s tires have not become too worn.
Check Your Coolant
Check your ATV’s coolant from time to time. Overheated coolant will start to discolor and develop a burnt odor, while coolant that has become mixed with oil will be milky in appearance. Both can be catastrophic for your ATV, so be sure to regularly check your coolant and replace it as needed.
Ride Wisely
For as powerful as your ATV is, it has limits. If you see an obstacle out on the trail that you are not sure your machine can overcome, there is no shame in avoiding it. Following this advice is not only healthier for your quad, but it can help you avoid potential accidents.
