Your UTV’s shocks and suspension system helps transform what would otherwise be a jarring, uncomfortable ride into a fun day out on the trail. Of the many systems that make up your UTV, the shocks and suspension is one of the most complex, requiring careful maintenance and adjustment in order to function effectively. That’s why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has created this guide to maintaining your UTV’s shocks and suspension.

Getting Your Shocks Adjusted

First, you need to understand all the different ways in which your UTV’s shocks can be adjusted.

Low-speed and high-speed damping control how much your UTV vibrates at low and high speeds, respectively. Rebound damping controls how much the UTV bobs up and down over rough terrain. Preload adjustment determines how stiff or relaxed the suspension system is. Finally, ride height determines the amount of travel (movement) that the swing or A-arms provide. Luckily, you won’t need to adjust more than one setting at a time in most cases.

When adjusting your UTV’s shocks, ask yourself how you intended to use the vehicle. Those looking to haul or carry heavy loads should focus on getting the preload adjustment just right. If you plan to trail ride over bumpy terrain, calibrate the rebound damping. Racers will want to take a look at their UTV’s high-speed damping. If you plan to switch from one activity to another, be sure to adjust your UTV’s shocks accordingly.

Professional UTV Suspension Maintenance

There are many UTV repair and maintenance tasks simple enough to be performed at home. However, adjusting the vehicle’s shocks and suspension system is not one of them. Calibrating the suspension system requires a unique skill set and a lot of experience. While scheduling an appointment every time you want to re-adjust the shocks might seem inconvenient, attempting to do it on your own is likely to result in damage to your UTV or injury due to mechanical failure. Leave it to the professionals!
