How to Jump Start a Motorcycle Battery

When your motorcycle’s battery dies mid-ride, jump starting can help you get it to the nearest service station. However, attempting a jump start without the right equipment or know-how can result in harm to the vehicle or you. That is why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has created this guide to jump-starting a motorcycle.

Prepare to Jump Start

It’s important that you have a proper pair of jumper cables on hand if you intend to jump-start your motorcycle. Luckily, many stores sell a compact set that you will easily be able to store on your bike. You will also need to pack safety glasses and sturdy gloves to protect yourself when you attempt the jump start. Finally, don’t forget to remove any accessories like jewelry that might conduct the battery’s charge before attempting the jump start.

Analyze the Situation

Your next step is to analyze what went wrong with the battery. Check for any cracks, leaks, or severed wires. Make sure that the battery has enough electrolytes, with the battery cables well fitted and free from corrosion. Remove any equipment that might be draining the battery life.

Find a Vehicle and Attach the Cables

Find a vehicle such as a car or another motorcycle to provide the power. Make sure that the two vehicles are close without touching and remove the insulating clips from the batteries. Find the positive terminals on both batteries, usually indicated by a plus sign. Attach one of the red jumper cables to your motorcycle battery’s positive terminal and the other end to the positive terminal of the battery that will be providing the power. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative terminal on the battery that will be providing power, and attach the other end to a grounded part of the motorcycle, such as the frame.

Your next step will depend on what kind of vehicle you are using to provide the power. If you are using a motorcycle, the amperages will be about the same, and you can simply start it up. However, a car battery has a higher amperage than a motorcycle battery, which can damage your motorcycle’s charging system. If you are using an automobile to jump-start your motorcycle, do not start it.

Once the jump start is complete, remove the red and black cables from both vehicles and head to the nearest service department to get everything checked out.
