While trail riding may be one of the most popular ways to use a side by side, this activity carries a certain amount of risk. It is very important that you know and follow the safety guidelines involved, both for your own sake and for the sake of others. That is why the experts at Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center have created this list of side by side trail riding tips.

Stick to Designated Trails

While going off the beaten path in your side by side may seem exciting, it is actually a bad idea for several reasons. First, your side by side can trample plants and other vegetation, causing harm to the environment. Second, your chances of falling into a ditch or encountering an obstacle that you cannot safely overcome increase exponentially once you go off-trail. Third, going off-trail while on state or federal land can result in a hefty fine or your license being revoked. Overall, remember that trails are established a certain way for a reason.

Safety Equipment

You and any passengers you take with you should have proper safety equipment. This includes a well-fitting helmet to keep your head protected. We also recommend wearing goggles with anti-fog and UV protection features for better visibility. Finally, full-length clothing will protect your skin against sun and flying debris.

Be Polite

Always share the trail and be polite to others. Follow the proper right of way when you encounter other riders and be sure to let them know how many people are coming behind you. If you are deferring, move over as far as you safely can. Alert other riders to poor trail conditions, and look out for people stopped on the side of the trail. In most cases, they will just be taking a photo, but sometimes you may encounter riders that are experiencing mechanical or medical problems and need assistance.
